I got a roll of blank pictures because the film did not advance. How do I prevent this from happening again?

When loading a new roll of film, don't be afraid to pull enough film leader out of the cartridge to catch the take-up reel. This is a critical point for both manual and auto-loading models. Trying to scrimp on film at this point can easily result in no pictures at all, because the film has not been allowed to advance in the camera.
Note: Always follow camera manufacturer's recommendations for proper loading technique. And always remember to remove your camera's lens cap before taking any pictures.
